Utah Governors and Legislators Retirement Plan

(State of Utah ONLY)

Governors of the state of Utah, as well as all legislators in both the state Senate and House of Representatives, are eligible for coverage under the Tier 1 plan, if they have eligible service credit in any URS retirement plan through June 30, 2011.

Governors and legislators may elect to forfeit a retirement benefit and participate exclusively in a defined contribution plan administered by our office.

The Governors and Legislators Retirement Plan is closed to elected officials who began initial employment on or after July 1, 2011. When employers certify their positions as full time, they are only eligible to participate in the Tier 2 Public Employees Defined Contribution Plan.

Steps for the Employer

When employees choose this exempt status, state agencies should certify them online as eligible, print a Request for Exemption State of Utah (Form MERQ-5), and give it to the employee.

Steps for the Member

Complete, sign, and forward the Request for Exemption State of Utah (Form MERQ-5) to our office before the effective exemption date on the form.
